WASHINGTON, DC -March 8, 2019: A commercial real estate agent who focuses on retail space can expect to work with a variety of store types and restaurant owners.
One day it may be women’s apparel, the next a new concept of liquid nitrogen frozen desserts. Auto repair services, sporting goods, pharmacies and home décor, typically all can be part of a retail representative’s routine. One concept that may seem to come from far afield – the other side of the world, to be exact – is the cat café. First found in Taiwan and spread to Japan and throughout Asia, now the cat café phenomenon is slowing creeping its way into the American storefront.
Cassandra Maloney of the Washington, DC office of Divaris Real Estate, Inc. represented Crumbs & Whiskers in its expansion in Washington, DC. The cat café and its sister pop-up Kitty Lounge currently are operating two locations in Georgetown.
Crumbs & Whiskers is the brainchild of Kanchan Singh, 28-year-old entrepreneur who experienced her first cat café in Thailand in 2014. It inspired her to change her life and in September 2016, she opened the first C&W in Los Angeles.
The way the concept works is simple. Login in to crumbsandwhiskers.com, book a timeslot, typically for 70-minutes, sign a waiver and come by either the adult cat café on 3211 O Street NW or the temporary Kitten Lounge at 3109 M Street NW in Washington, DC. Coffee and tea beverages and cookies are available for purchase from The Dough Jar, a nearby human café, and delivered by the Crumbs & Whiskers staff. Enjoy your treats while surrounded by up to 25 gentle, purring, sleepy felines.
Furnished with fluffy pink and white oversized cat beds on the floor, Crumbs & Whiskers is a chill space to spend an hour, or even a full day with up to 22 of your favorite family and friends in a private feline fiesta. There are toys to tease the kitties and Polaroids to take home as well as mugs, t-shirts, stickers, pins, sweatshirts and plastic cat ears for sale. If a furry friend’s gray or pink bowtie and name tag really speaks to you, applications are available to make them a permanent part of your household.
The cats are there to destress you, be petted and are also all up for adoption.
That’s one of the main goals of the company – to save kittens and cats from high-risk shelters where their numbers are swelling beyond capacity. The DC-area partner is Homeward Trails, an animal rescue organization with shelters in rural Wise County, Va and Fayette County, W.Va, and Wise County Humane Society. The response to the new location has been strong. Currently, there area over 90 adoption applications out for the kittens at the M Street location. All totaled, the DC and LA Crumbs & Whiskers combined have saved over 2,050 cats and kittens from euthanasia.
This heartwarming mission and all the feline love given to new cat guardians, makes the concept of a cat café one of the more rewarding forms of retail tenant representation assignments.
