New Kid in Town: buybuyBaby Opens in
Virginia SPRINGFIELD,
VIRGINIA -- With the recent demise of
retailers like Zainy Brainy, KB Toys, Imaginarium and Kids R Us,
buybuyBaby has
a leg up in the children’s retail market. The all-encompassing
children’s retailer
operates eight stores in New York, New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia.
buybuyBaby
covers all the needs of children up to three years old, offering
more than
20,000 products, including clothing, furniture, toys,
books,
CDs, audio and video tapes, stuffed animals, infant seats, walkers,
bassinets,
playpens, high chairs, car seats, strollers, diapers and related
items. The
store also features a breastfeeding room; a computerized gift
registry; free gift wrap; an on-site artist;
and an
in-store only, special-order catalog of items to complement the store’s
existing inventory.
Jeffrey and
Richard Feinstein, sons of the co-founder of Bed Bath & Beyond,
left
the
company shortly after its IPO and began buybuyBaby in 1995, opening
their first
store in May of 1996 in Rockville, Maryland.
“We bring
shopping centers a broad cross-section of customers, from children to
grandmothers, from as far away as 50 miles,” says Jeffrey Feinstein.
The company
looks for locations in regional strip centers that vary in size from
28,000 to
more than 60,000 square feet, depending on the market. After almost ten
years
in Maryland, the owners decided it was time to accommodate its loyal
customers
who would travel from Virginia to Maryland to shop at buybuyBaby, and
opened a
store at Springfield Plaza in Springfield, Virginia. buybuyBaby signed
a lease
for 28,000 square feet in the shopping center, whose existing tenants
include
Giant Food, Trader Joes, CVS/pharmacy, Fed Ex/Kinko’s and David’s
Bridal. Earl
Goodman
of Divaris Real Estate’s Rockville office represented the retailer in
the
negotiations. In addition to the Springfield store, buybuyBaby locations can be found in Rockville, Maryland; Paramus, Scarsdale, and Totowa, New Jersey; Garden City, New York City, and Huntington Station, New York. Divaris Real
