part of the 1,067-acre estate of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. In the
early 1900’s, the company’s founder built a community that
included dairy barns, a church, school, greenhouse, central power plant,
laundry, ice house, carriage sheds, blacksmith shop, smokehouse and cottages
for the families of supervisory staff. All the buildings were designed
to resemble the architecture of a quaint English country village.
